Maps, plans and directions
Learn the language of position and direction, a five-step method for following a speaker round a plan and five common map traps, then practise on an original site tour and a directions conversation.

Module 7 · Lesson 5 of 6
In this lesson
- Use the language of position and direction (opposite, next to, at the far end, on your left as you go in) to place things on a plan quickly
- Prepare a plan before the recording: find the start, north, the fixed points, and describe each blank spot in your own words
- Re-set left and right every time the speaker moves or turns round, so a change of viewpoint does not cost you marks
- Recognise five common map traps: the old use, the changed plan, the wrong belief, the flipped viewpoint and the nearby reference
- Apply the method to an original Part 2-style site tour and a conversation in which someone asks for directions
