- Skim a paragraph for its main ideaFind what a paragraph is mainly about in seconds: read the topic sentence, tell the main idea from the details and match headings and information to paragraphs.
- Scan for names, numbers and datesFind one exact detail fast: scan for capital letters, years and amounts, spot numbers written in words, and check the sentence around what you find.
- True, False or Not Given: what each one meansLearn exactly what True, False and Not Given mean, why False and Not Given are easy to mix up, and practise on two short passages.
- Spot the paraphrase: same idea, different wordsReading questions rarely use the text’s own words. Learn the main ways an idea is reworded, avoid near misses, and practise on four exam tasks.
- Sentence completion: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDSComplete sentences, summaries, notes, flow-charts and diagram labels with words from the text: keep within the word limit, copy exactly and check the grammar.
